While rumors circulate about Martin Gerber's future in Ottawa, the Senators learned Thursday that their defacto No. 1 netminder Ray Emery is headed for surgery.

According to multiple reports out of Canada, Emery was scheduled to have surgery Thursday in Cleveland to repair torn cartilage in his wrist.

Emery is expected to miss 2-3 months, meaning he'll miss most of training camp, but be ready for the start of the 2007-08 season.

"We looked at a lot of options, spoke with [GM] Bryan Murray and we felt this was the best option," Emery's agent J.P. Barry told The Ottawa Sun. "Obviously with them going so deep in the playoffs the timetable becomes an issue."

Emery, who surpassed Gerber as the Senators' No. 1 goalie early last season, helped Ottawa reach the Cup finals for the first time in the club's history. The Sens lost to the Ducks in five games. Emery is in the midst of negotiations for a new deal. He made $925,000 in 2006-07.
