McCarty starts NHL comeback with minor league appearance

MUSKEGON, Mich. -- Former Detroit Red Wings forward
Darren McCarty began his NHL comeback attempt Wednesday, skating for the
Flint Generals in an IHL game against the Muskegon Fury.

The 35-year-old McCarty went scoreless in the game, which the
Fury won 5-4 in a shootout.

The veteran forward is angling for a return to the NHL after two
injury-filled seasons with the Calgary Flames.

Red Wings officials are monitoring his progress and say McCarty
could earn a spot with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American
Hockey League if he produces with the Generals. McCarty's next game
for Flint is Friday.

Detroit bought out McCarty's contract in 2005 after the lockout
that forced the cancellation of the 2004-05 season. He was on the
Wings' 1997, 1998 and 2002 Stanley Cup championship teams.
