BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Lightning defenseman Brad Lukowich will undergo surgery to repair a sports hernia on Friday, and is expected to miss the next four weeks.

Lukowich will have the procedure performed in Munich, Germany, by Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck, who has previously operated on other NHL players. Muschaweck's minimal repair technique cuts the typical sports hernia repair recovery time in half.

"We are deeply grateful that Dr. Muschaweck quickly rearranged her schedule to accommodate us," general manager Jay Feaster said. "We look forward to getting Brad back as quickly as possible."

Lukowich left Tampa Bay's game against Atlanta on Feb. 9 because of the injury after playing just 6 minutes. He missed the next three games before opting to travel to Germany on Wednesday.

The eight-year pro leads the team with 147 hits, and has one goal and seven points in 54 games. He won a Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars in 1999, and again with the Lightning in 2004. He re-signed with the Lightning this past offseason after playing the past two seasons with the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils.
