Canucks claim Wellwood in effort to bolster offense

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- The Vancouver Canucks claimed forward Kyle Wellwood off waivers on Wednesday in an effort to bolster an offense that struggled to score last season.

The 25-year-old Wellwood is coming off a disappointing season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and they were unlikely to offer the restricted free agent a qualifying offer to retain his rights.

Wellwood had 21 points (eight goals, 13 assists) and a minus-12 rating in 59 games last season while earning $950,000, the last year of his contract. He showed promise the previous season when he had 42 points (12 goals, 30 assists) in 48 games.

Wellwood has struggled with groin injuries the last two years.
