Veteran NHL forward Gelinas joins Swiss club Bern

BERN, Switzerland -- Veteran NHL player Martin Gelinas signed with Swiss club Bern to bolster its European Champions Hockey League campaign.

The 38-year-old Canadian, a Stanley Cup winner with the Edmonton Oilers in 1990, beat a midnight transfer deadline Monday to be eligible for Bern's CHL game against Swedish club HV71 Jonkoping on Nov. 12.

Gelinas, who skated last season for Nashville, played in 1,420 regular-season and postseason NHL games. He scored 332 goals as a winger in Edmonton, Quebec, Vancouver, Carolina, Calgary and Florida.

He returns to Europe after spending the NHL's 2004-05 lockout season with Swiss clubs Lugano and Morges.
