NEW YORK -- New York Islanders forward Pascal Morency has been suspended indefinitely after leaving the bench to start a fight with Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf.
The NHL announced the suspension Friday. No date for a hearing has been set.
Phaneuf's hit knocked out Islanders forward Kyle Okposo in the second period of the Flames' 5-4 shootout victory Thursday night in an exhibition game.
Morency jumped off the bench and charged Phaneuf, starting a brawl that included New York goalie Martin Biron. Okposo remained motionless for more than six minutes. He was immobilized and removed from the ice on a stretcher.
Morency was assessed a game misconduct penalty.
