Thrashers reward Afinogenov, Popovic
ATLANTA -- Forward Maxim Afinogenov and defenseman Mark Popovic, who played in the preseason with the Atlanta Thrashers on pro tryouts, have signed with the team.
A source told ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun that Afinogenov's deal is for one-year, $800,000.
Afinogenov had one goal and an assist in three preseason games. The nine-year NHL veteran has 334 career points, including 134 goals, with the Buffalo Sabres. The 30-year-old native of Moscow also played in 49 playoff games with Buffalo.
Afinogenov played for Russia in the 2002 and 2006 Olympics.
Popovic, a native of Stoney Creek, Ontario, previously played with the Thrashers from 2004-08. He spent the 2008-09 season in Russia playing for St. Petersburg of the KHL.
