The Penguins recalled forward Luca Caputi from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to replace Kunitz, who had six goals and 20 points in 30 games.

Penguins general manager Ray Shero says Kunitz played with the injury for an extended period before deciding the operation was needed. Kunitz has three goals and five assists in his last 14 games.
