Gary Bettman locked in for long term
Gary Bettman will be commissioner for quite a while longer.
Toronto's Globe and Mail reported Friday that Bettman had his contract extended in November by NHL owners for five more seasons, which a league source also confirmed to ESPN.com on Friday morning.
"Old news," Bettman told the Globe and Mail via e-mail Thursday. "I believe my contract has been extended four times, each time with the approval of the board of governors."
The NHL has never announced contract extensions for its commissioner.
Bettman, reached via e-mail by ESPN.com Friday, declined comment. He took office Feb. 1, 1993.
Pierre LeBrun covers the NHL for ESPN.com.
