Datsyuk has been out for seven games with a foot injury. He was close to returning for Game 4 on Thursday night, but didn't play after skating in the pregame warmup.
The series against the Pittsburgh Penguins is tied at two games apiece.
Babcock will use Datsyuk, who scored 97 points this season, on the wing instead of center, at least at the start.
"We're going to see how he does," Babcock said. "If he looks like himself, he'll be in the middle."
Red Wings forward Dan Cleary, however, did not participate in the morning skate. The Detroit Free Press reported that Cleary, who has a lower-body injury, would not disclose the results of any tests.
"We'll see how warm-ups go," Cleary told the newspaper.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
