Defenseman hit in the eye Saturday

CALGARY, Alberta -- Calgary defenseman Rhett Warrener, struck in the eye by a stick over the weekend, sat out Game 3 of the Flames' second-round series against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night.

He didn't practice Monday but said he would be ready to play in the series, which was tied 1-1 entering Tuesday. Warrener didn't skate with the Flames in pregame practice.

Warrener was engaged with Detroit's Derian Hatcher along the boards near the Calgary net Saturday when Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman appeared to unintentionally hit him in the right eye with his stick.

When Warrener's vision improved, doctors cleared him to play. He was on the bench in the third period but didn't return to the ice.

Taking Warrener's spot in the lineup Tuesday was Brennan Evans, a 6-foot-4 native of Alberta who made his NHL debut. Evans played 64 games with Lowell of the AHL and had a goal and 10 assists.
