DENVER (Ticker) -- The Colorado Avalanche look to stretch their unbeaten streak to six games Monday night as they host the struggling Washington Capitals.

Colorado improved to 3-0-2 in its last five games with a 5-1 pounding of the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.

Teemu Selanne, Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk scored in the first period and rookie Philippe Sauve made 35 saves to improve to 2-4-1. The Avalanche had just 16 first-period goals in their first 25 games.

Hejduk scored his team-leading 15th goal with 4:42 left in the first before leaving with a groin injury and may miss Monday's game.

Defenseman Derek Morris and former Capital Andrei Nikolishin. scored power-play goals in the third period for Colorado.

Former Washington captain Steve Konowalchuk added a pair of assists after failing to register a point in his previous five contests. Since being acquired on October 22, Konowalchuk has eight goals and three assists in 21 games.

Washington has lost two in a row following road wins over Columbus and the New York Islanders. Two nights after managing nine shots on goal at New Jersey, the Capitals scored the first two goals before suffering a 7-3 loss at Los Angeles on Saturday.

Defenseman Sergei Gonchar and Robert Lang scored in the first 4:21 before the Capitals allowed five unanswered tallies and suffered their second four-goal loss of the season.

Washington is 2-0-1 in its last three games in Colorado and the teams are meeting for the only time this season.
