PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins try to continue their late-season surge Sunday afternoon as they host the Washington Capitals.
Although Pittsburgh will finish as the worst team in the Eastern Conference, it has played well in the last month. Since an 18-game losing streak, the Penguins are 11-5-3.
Pittsburgh takes a seven-game (6-0-2) unbeaten streak into this contest and enters off Friday's 3-2 win at Atlanta. Kelly Buchberger ended an 87-game drought as the Penguins also got goals from Aleksey Morozov and Lasse Pirjeta.
Washington has the second-fewest points in the East. The Capitals are 2-12-2-1 in their last 17 games and are 0-7-1 in their last eight road games.
On Saturday, Washington played its final home game and suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to the New York Rangers. Jeff Halpern scored his 18th and 19th goals in the loss.
Halpern also had a big game against Pittsburgh on Tuesday. He scored and set up Trent Whitfield's two tallies in a 4-2 win.
Washington's Olaf Kolzig started and remained stuck on 19 wins. He has won at least 20 games in six straight seasons.
