DETROIT (Ticker) - Detroit Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman is on the verge of overtaking "Mr. Hockey" on the career assists list.

Yzerman can tie Hall of Famer Gordie Howe for seventh place all-time when the Red Wings look to snap a two-game home losing streak Tuesday against the New Jersey Devils.

A nine-time All-Star and former Conn Smythe Trophy winner, Yzerman has 1,048 assists, one fewer than Howe, who spent 25 seasons with the Red Wings and one with the Hartford Whalers before retiring as the league's career assists leader in 1980.

Mathieu Schneider scored his ninth goal for Detroit, which lost to the New York Islanders for the first time in nearly seven years with Sunday's 2-1 defeat. The Red Wings have lost seven of 10 overall.

The Devils have won four of their last five and will try to snap a six-game losing skid in Detroit since November 6, 1996.

Viktor Kozlov scored the tying goal in regulation and had the clincher in a shootout for New Jersey in Saturday's 3-2 triumph over the Minnesota Wild. Jay Pandolfo added his fifth tally for the Devils.

New Jersey hopes to have coach Larry Robinson behind the bench after he missed Saturday's contest due to an illness.
