SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Joe Thornton apparently was the answer to the San Jose Sharks' problems.

Thornton tries to lead the Sharks to their fifth straight win Saturday when they host the Carolina Hurricanes in an interconference matchup.

Since being acquired in a blockbuster trade with Boston on November 30, Thornton has led the Sharks to four straight wins. San Jose, which had dropped 10 straight games prior to Thornton's arrival, has tallied at least five goals in each game during its winning streak, marking the first time in team history that it has scored five goals in four straight games.

Thornton had two assists in Thursday's 6-2 triumph vs. Florida, giving him a goal and seven assists in four games with the Sharks. He also has brought out the best in Patrick Marleau, who collected a goal and two assists Thursday and has two goals and 10 assists since Thornton's arrival.

Carolina is coming off Thursday's 3-2 win in Los Angeles behind two goals from Erik Cole and 35 saves from Martin Gerber. Justin Williams also scored for the Hurricanes, who improved to 3-1-1 on their six-game road trip.

The Hurricanes and Sharks have not met since October 28, 2003, when Carolina posted a 3-0 victory in the teams' lone meeting of the 2003-04 season.
