CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Nikolai Khabibulin's knee injury could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the Chicago Blackhawks.
With their top netminder sidelined, the Blackhawks likely will lean on impressive rookie Adam Munro on Sunday when they skate with the Calgary Flames.
Signed to a lucrative free agent contract this offseason, Khabibulin has been a major disappointment for the Blackhawks. He has struggled for most of the season and has been sidelined since January 20 with a sprained knee.
While backups Craig Anderson and Corey Crawford have not shown the ability to fill in for Khabibulin, Munro has displayed some potential.
The 23-year-old Munro improved to 3-1-2 this season by making 26 saves in Thursday's 2-0 victory over Calgary. It was the first career shutout for the Blackhawks' 2001 first-round pick, who has a 1.91 goals-against average this season.
Calgary has dropped two straight games since a four-game winning streak. In Tuesday's 7-4 loss to Colorado, backup goaltender Philippe Sauve allowed all seven goals on only 27 shots.
On Thursday, Miikka Kiprusoff was back in net and played well before allowing third-period tallies to Martin Lapointe and Kyle Calder. Kiprusoff finished with 18 saves for the Flames, who have lost two of three against the Blackhawks this season.
