BOSTON (Ticker) -- Looking to gain ground in the Eastern Conference playoff race, the Montreal Canadiens have a new goaltender.

David Aebischer could make his debut for the Canadiens when they look to snap a two- game slide Thursday against an "Original Six" rival - the Boston Bruins.

Montreal acquired Aebischer from Colorado on Wednesday for former Hart and Vezina Trophy winner Jose Theodore, who is sidelined with a broken heel.

Aebischer, who was 25-14-2 with the Avalanche this season, took over upon the retirement of the legendary Patrick Roy, in 2003. Ironically, Roy led Montreal to a pair of Stanley Cup titles before he was dealt to Colorado in 1995.

Andrei Markov and Chris Higgins scored power-play goals and Richard Zednik added his 14th tally for the Canadiens in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to Toronto.

Montreal has a one-point lead over Atlanta in the race for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot and will look for their fourth win in five meetings against the Bruins this season.

Patrice Bergeron scored his 20th goal and Milan Jurcina added his sixth on a power play for Boston, which lost for the fifth time in six meetings with Tuesday's 3-2 defeat to Buffalo.

The Bruins claimed Mariusz Czerkawski off waivers from Toronto on Wednesday. He will report as soon as his visa process is complete.
