SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) - The San Jose Sharks would be among the top eight teams in the Western Conference if not for their mediocre record against the Phoenix Coyotes.

The Sharks go for their ninth win in 12 outings but just their second in six encounters with the Coyotes when the teams open a two-game set here Thursday.

Back home after a five-game road trip, San Jose is in ninth place in the West, two points behind Edmonton for the final postseason berth and one point ahead of 10th-place Los Angeles.

Steve Bernier scored his fourth goal for the Sharks, who lost for the second time on the road trip with Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Phoenix has five wins in its last seven outings but likely will miss the playoffs for the fourth time in five years. The Coyotes are 12 points in back of Edmonton with just 10 games left.

Shane Doan tied a career-high with his 27th goal - giving him 10 in his last 14 games - and Curtis Joseph moved into sixth place in career victories (424) as the Coyotes posted a 5-3 victory Tuesday over the Nashville Predators.

The Sharks are 1-3-1 against the Coyotes this season, with losses in both home meetings. Phoenix took the first four encounters before San Jose received an overtime goal from defenseman Tom Preissing in a 5-4 victory February 12.
