SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) - Even a recent winning surge may not be enough to get the Florida Panthers into the postseason.

Still hoping for their first playoff berth since 1999-2000, Florida can set a franchise record with its sixth consecutive home victory Wednesday when it takes on the Atlanta Thrashers.

Although they have won eight of their last 10 contests, the Panthers are tied with Toronto for 10th place in the Eastern Conference, one point behind Atlanta and eight in back of Tampa Bay with seven games remaining.

Nathan Horton scored his 27th goal for Florida, which lost for the second time in three games with Monday's 4-1 defeat to the Lightning.

Playing the second contest of a three-game road trip, Atlanta has lost three of four and is running out of time in a bid for its first trip to the playoffs.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 48th goal and had two assists Marian Hossa added his 34th tally for the Thrashers in Monday's 6-4 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

Atlanta has won four of the six meetings with Florida this season and will close the regular season against the Panthers on April 18.
