Nashville at San Jose 10:30 pm EDT Western Conference quarterfinals Sharks lead, 2-1

SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Captain Patrick Marleau has steered the San Jose Sharks to the brink of a commanding series lead.

Marleau hopes to help the fifth-seeded Sharks take a three games to one lead over the fourth-seeded Nashville Predators when the teams square off Thursday in Game Four of their best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal series.

San Jose's third-leading scorer during the regular season, Marleau scored twice in Tuesday's 4-1 triumph in Game Three. Rookie Steve Bernier and Jonathan Cheechoo also tallied for the Sharks, who have surrendered a total of one goal to the Predators in winning the last two games.

Vesa Toskala turned aside 16 shots on Tuesday to backstop a penalty-killing unit that held Nashville scoreless in four chances with the man advantage.

Playing in place of injured All-Star Tomas Vokoun, Chris Mason made 36 saves in Game Three as he was burned by two goals less than seven minutes apart in the second period and a pair of tallies 67 seconds apart late in the third.

Blue-liner Christian Ehrhoff collected three assists for San Jose, which held a commanding 40-17 advantage in shots.

Defenseman Kimmo Timonen scored the only goal for the Predators, who host Game Five on Sunday.
