Colorado at Dallas 2:00 pm EDT Western Conference quarterfinals Avalanche lead, 3-1

DALLAS (Ticker) - With their dreams of a first-round playoff sweep ended, the Colorado Avalanche can be content with one simple victory to advance in the playoffs.

The Avalanche can join the New Jersey Devils in the conference semifinals Sunday when they visit the Dallas Stars in Game Five of their Western Conference series.

After outscoring Dallas, 14-9, in its first three victories, Colorado managed just one goal in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Stars, prolonging their conference quarterfinal affair.

Brad Richardson scored the first goal of the game for the Avalanche before Dallas took over. Niklas Hagman had two goals and Jere Lehtinen and Bill Guerin added tallies for the Stars, who outshot Colorado, 28-13, in the final two periods.

The victory provided an emotional boost to Dallas, which had lost consecutive overtime contests to Colorado. The Stars are looking to avenge a five-game loss to the Avalanche in 2004 and become the third NHL team to win a series after a 3-0 deficit.

If Dallas wins, the series moves back to Denver for Game Six on Tuesday.
