TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Martin Brodeur saved all 16 shots he faced in his first preseason start Tuesday night to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Devils, who play the Flyers four times in their first five preseason games, scored three goals in the first 8:02 at the Sovereign Bank Arena. Philadelphia, which scored 10 goals in its previous two wins, defeated the Devils 6-1 on Friday in the preseason opener for both teams.

Although Patrick Elias and Scott Niedermayer did not suit up for the Devils, New Jersey played more regulars than in Friday's loss.

New Jersey scored three goals on its first seven shots against goalie Robert Esche. After a Flyers turnover in their own zone, Sergei Brylin made it 1-0 with a shot from the slot. Grant Marshall made it a two-goal lead at 6:35 and Mike Rupp scored 1:27 later to close the scoring.

The Flyers applied pressure toward the end of the second period, but Brodeur stopped Justin Williams in front. Scott Clemmensen was in the Devils goal for the third period and made five saves to secure the shutout.

New Jersey held a 25-21 shots advantage.

Esche, who is battling Jeff Hackett for the starting goalie job for Philadelphia, played the entire game and made 22 saves.
