DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Red Wings weren't going to be surprised by the surprising Minnesota Wild two games in a row.

Curtis Joseph earned his 40th career shutout, and Igor Larionov had a goal and two assists as the Red Wings beat the Wild 4-0 Tuesday night. Just two days earlier, the playoff-bound Wild -- behind goalie Dwayne Roloson -- beat the Red Wings 4-0.

Joseph, who has four shutouts this season, was forced to make only 18 saves. Sergei Fedorov, Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom scored the other goals, and Mathieu Schneider had two assists.

Larionov gave Detroit the lead just 1:57 in when he scored on a breakaway. His slap shot from the inside edge of the left circle beat Roloson.

"Had a good start, quick goal and it got everybody going,'' Larionov said. "Had to win this game tonight.''

Fedorov scored a power-play goal 1:28 into the second period. He put in a wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle after taking a pass from Larionov. The goal was Fedorov's 31st of the season and 395th of his career.

It came just 30 seconds after the Wild were assessed a penalty for having too many men on the ice.

"When they get the first goal, they clog up the ice a lot,'' Holmstrom said. "Now we got the first goal. It was a totally different game. They had to open up a bit more.''

Zetterberg put in a rebound from the slot just 27 seconds into the third period.

Holmstrom reached 20 goals for the first time in his seven-season NHL career with a one-timed slap shot from the left dot at 9:44 of the third period.

"There's a reason why a team finishes first overall. This is a bunch of guys with a lot of talent,'' Minnesota coach Jacques Lemaire said. "They moved the puck well. They were too much for us.''

Minnesota was held without a shot for over 10 minutes to begin the game, before Marian Gaborik's breakaway was stopped by Joseph.

"Curtis was excellent. A hard game to play,'' Detroit coach Dave Lewis said. "Nothing going on in our zone and all of a sudden, Gaborik gets a breakaway.''

Minnesota scored 21 seconds into the game on Sunday.

"We try to play same game,'' Gaborik said. "Last game, we scored the first goal. At the beginning they scored.''

Game notes
Detroit C Steve Yzerman was cut on his forehead and across the bridge of the nose by an accidental high stick with 2:42 left in the first period. At the same time, Jeremy Stevenson slew-footed Yzerman, who fell backwards to the ice. Stevenson wasn't given a penalty. Yzerman got stitches and returned in the second period. ... Yzerman returned after sitting out Sunday's game, as did Holmstrom who had the flu. Yzerman didn't play Sunday because the Red Wings are being careful with his right knee and don't want Yzerman to play on consecutive days. He has played 11 games since his return from offseason surgery. ... Minnesota C Cliff Ronning returned after missing Sunday's game with the flu. ... Larionov's 10th goal gave Detroit a league-leading 12 players with double figures in goals.
