Bruins avoid being eliminated with big Game 4 win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Glen Murray scored a power-play goal in the first period and Felix Potvin made 28 saves as the Boston Bruins beat the New Jersey Devils 1-0 in a preseason game Tuesday night.

Grant Marshall was penalized for high-sticking at 2:29, and Murray took advantage when he scored 15 seconds later.

Potvin, signed as a free agent on Sept. 3, boosted his chances of becoming Boston's No. 1 goalie by blanking the defending Stanley Cup champions.

He was at his best midway through the third period when he made five saves -- including a gem against John Madden -- during a 1:22 stretch when the Devils skated with a two-man advantage.

Madden skated in from the right circle, making a bid for a short-handed goal, but Potvin caught the puck as it headed for the upper right corner.

Boston came within inches of scoring a second goal with 8:20 left in the second period, when Jeff Jillson's slap shot from the right point hit the left post.

New Jersey outshot Boston 28-18 and held the Bruins to one shot for a span of nearly 20 minutes starting at the 11-minute mark of the first period.
