EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- John Madden scored an unassisted
power-play goal in the third period Saturday night to lead the New
Jersey Devils to a 4-2 preseason victory over the Philadelphia
Christian Berglund, Ray Giroux and Jeff Friesen also scored for
the Devils, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Philadelphia,
which had won three of its first four games, got goals from Jeremy
Roenick and Sami Kapanen.
Madden notched the game-winner 6:34 into the third after Flyers
defenseman Jeff Woywitka lost control of the puck under pressure in
the Philadelphia zone.
Friesen closed out the scoring with a power-play goal with 2:37
Berglund gave the Devils an early lead when he took a long lead
pass from goalie Martin Brodeur and sped down the left wing to
score 8:19 into the game.
Roenick, who scored the overtime winner Friday night in the
Flyers 5-4 victory over the Devils, scored with 9:36 left in the
first. He deflected a centering feed from Simon Gagne over Brodeur
for a power-play goal. It was the first preseason goal surrendered
by Brodeur after two scoreless appearances.
Giroux gave New Jersey at 2-1 lead with a short-handed goal 2:46
into the second. Kapanen deflected a pass from Justin Williams at
7:13 to pull Philadelphia even.
