PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Mark Recchi helped the Philadelphia Flyers salvage a point from a disappointing performance.

Recchi scored a short-handed goal late in the third period as the Philadelphia Flyers rallied from an early two-goal deficit and tied Carolina 4-4 Saturday night.

Recchi took a pass from Eric Desjardins and beat Jamie Storr with a wrist shot from outside the faceoff circle for his fourth goal of the season for Philadelphia, which is off to a 2-1-3-1 start.

Recchi credited Desjardins with making a great play.

"I don't know what happened on their end, if they got caught in a change or whatever, but I had a two-on-one with Sami (Kapanen)," Recchi said. "I looked to make the pass, but they took that away so I just took the shot."

Niclas Wallin scored two goals and Storr made 28 saves in his first start of the season as Carolina finished a four-game road trip unbeaten at 1-0-3-0. Radim Vrbata added a goal and an assist, and Danny Markov also scored for the Hurricanes.

"It's a good road trip anytime you can get (five) out of (eight) points," said Carolina's Erik Cole. "But I think we know we could have had all (eight) this trip. But that's the way it goes sometimes."

Wallin opened the scoring with his first goal of the season in the first period on a slap shot through the legs of Philadelphia goaltender Jeff Hackett. Wallin scored again in the third period on a nearly identical shot.

"I was out of the lineup the first four games, so this was only my third chance to play," Wallin said. "But I'm not here to score goals. ... I know that today that they went in, but we put up 35 shots. Some of them are going to go in."

The Flyers erased a two-goal deficit with a pair of scores in a 41-second span late in the second period.

Jeremy Roenick scored his third of the season on the power play, and Michal Handzus tied the score at 16:31 when he grabbed a bouncing puck and lifted it over Storr's stick.

"We're going to have to learn to play with those one and two-goal leads," Cole said. "Eventually, we'll figure it out."

Eric Chouinard also scored for the Flyers, who are winless in their last three games (0-1-1-1). It was the third consecutive start in which Hackett has allowed four goals.

"I think we are grateful we got one point," Philadelphia coach Ken Hitchcock said. "Tying at home is not our goal, and allowing four goals every night, we have to get better." ^Notes:@ With an assist on the Hurricanes' first goal, Jeff O'Neill now has 200 for his career. ... Desjardins, who had two assists, moved into eighth place on the Flyers' career list for games played with 652. ... Veteran Flyers defenseman Chris Therien was sent to the Philadelphia Phantoms, the team's AHL affiliate, for a two-game conditioning assignment. He is expected to rejoin the team Sunday. ... John LeClair (foot), Donald Brashear (knee) and Radovan Somik (knee) were sidelined for Philadelphia. ... Carolina had four former Flyers in their lineup: Marty Murray, Rod BrindAmour, Bruno St. Jacques and Jesse Boulerice.
