DENVER (Ticker) -- The end of their eight-game losing streak
could mean the Colorado Avalanche will be extremely testy Saturday
when they face the Detroit Red Wings.

After a 32-14 edge in goals during the streak, Colorado lost for
the first time in January with Thursday's 4-2 loss to the
struggling Chicago Blackhawks.

Rookie Marek Svatos scored his team-leading 28th goal in the
first period and Antti Laaksonen added his 11th for the
Avalanche, who had the third-longest streak in franchise history
ended.

Colorado is in seventh place in the Western Conference, with a
two-point lead over Edmonton, while trailing Calgary and
Vancouver by two for first place in the Northwest Division.

Detroit continues to lead the West in wins (31), points (65) and
is second in goals (172). However, the Red Wings only have a
three-point advantage over Nashville in the Central Division
race.

Tomas Holmstrom scored twice and Chris Osgood made 26 saves for
his 42nd career shutout as Detroit won for the fifth time in six
road games with Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Columbus Blue
Jackets.

Looking to avoid their first two-game losing streak since
December 12-17, the Avalanche are out to avenge a 7-3 loss to
Detroit on November 23. The teams have combined to win five
Stanley Cup titles since 1996.
