SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) -- After losing the first five games
of the season series between the teams, the Florida Panthers
finally have solved the Carolina Hurricanes.
Jozef Stumpel forged a tie just over five minutes into the third
period and defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski tallied 74 seconds into
overtime as the Panthers posted their second win over the
Hurricanes in as many days with a 4-3 victory.
Blanked in the first two meetings of the season and losing the
next three by a total of five goals, Florida got in the win
column against its Southeast Division rival with Friday's 5-3
Carolina appeared to be on track for a victory after Kevyn Adams
tallied 69 seconds into the third to make it 3-1, but Jon Sim
scored 35 seconds later and Stumpel tipped captain Olli
Jokinen's shot from the top of the right faceoff circle past
goaltender Martin Gerber to draw the Hurricanes even.
In the extra session, rookie Rostislav Olesz carried the puck to
the bottom of the right circle before passing to Kwiatkowski,
who redirected it by Gerber from the top of the crease for his
fourth of the season.
Jokinen scored his fifth goal in four games and Roberto Luongo
made 39 saves for the Panthers, who have won three straight.
Doug Weight netted his first tally in 12 contests with Carolina,
which has dropped three in a row.
