Stars top Canucks, extend winning streak to eight

DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Stars held their own through two periods of a rough game before Mike Modano took over in the third.

Modano scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period and the Stars stretched their home winning streak to eight games with a 4-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday night.

Marty Turco made 26 saves, Jussi Jokinen had a goal and two assists, Jere Lehtinen and Jason Arnott added goals, and Sergei Zubov had three assists to help the Stars win for the fifth time in six games.

Anson Carter and Daniel Sedin scored for the Canucks, who've lost four in a row as they try to remain in playoff contention.

The game included 28 penalties for 108 minutes as the teams met for the second time in three days.

"They're playing desperate hockey so we knew it would be a tight game and they would be aggressive," Modano said. "We knew it would be a good test and we wanted to see how we'd respond."

Modano, one of the league's most skilled forwards, added two assists Monday night and was the hero in both games against the Canucks. He scored both goals in Dallas' 2-1 victory at Vancouver on Saturday night.

Modano, who has only 46 penalty minutes this season, even took a rare swing at Vancouver's Bryan Allen during a third-period altercation, but it was his skating and stickhandling that impressed the Canucks.

"Modano right now is playing as well as anyone in the league," Canucks coach Marc Crawford said. "He was the difference in the last game and he was the difference tonight."

With Monday night's game tied at 2, Zubov's long pass sent Modano in alone and Modano beat goalie Alex Auld with a wrist shot at 3:08 of the final period.

"Sergei's the best passer I've ever seen," said Modano, who had just hit the ice on a line change. "I knew it was going to come. It was a matter of getting my stride and staying onside. It was a great pass."

Arnott added his 25th goal at 14:10 of the third period while Dallas had a 5-on-3 advantage, extending the lead to 4-2.

The Stars charged to a two-goal lead early in the second period when Jokinen struck for his 15th at 59 seconds and Lehtinen scored his 29th at 5:03.

Carter answered from the right circle with his 26th of the season at 11:10 of the second period, then Daniel Sedin tied it at 2 on a power-play rebound at 13:24.

But the Canucks couldn't maintain their momentum in the third period.

"I feel like I'm repeating myself," Canucks captain Markus Naslund said. "I think we were undisciplined, we took too many penalties and I think our power play wasn't as good as we needed it. The effort was there at times, just not at the right times."

A physical game became even rougher late in the second period when Dallas' Trevor Daley got into his second fight of the night, this time with Jarkko Ruutu. Daley, who traded punches with Matt Cooke in the first period, had not been involved in a fight in the first 90 games of his career.

Daley was assessed an instigation penalty in addition to fighting majors for Daley and Ruutu. While the officials were sorting out those penalties, Turco took a half-hearted swipe at Alexandre Burrows of the Canucks. Burrows attempted to retaliate, picking up a slashing penalty and a 10-minute misconduct.

Game notes

Stars RW Bill Guerin was hit in the right eye by a high stick from Brendan Morrison of the Canucks in the first period and Guerin missed the rest of the game. Guerin had a black eye and a cut over the eye that required multiple stitches. His condition will be evaluated Tuesday. Morrison was assessed a double-minor. Tippett said Guerin should be able to play in Dallas' next game Thursday night at Los Angeles as long as the swelling subsides. ... The Stars were playing for only the second time at home since Feb. 6 because of the Olympic break and two long trips. ... Vancouver is 2-9-1 in its last 12 meetings with Dallas.
