Preds win fifth straight, end Red Wings' six-game streak

DETROIT (AP) -- Nashville goaltender Tomas Vokoun wasn't great in the shootout, just good enough.

Martin Erat's goal in the sixth round of the tiebreaker gave the Predators a 3-2 victory that ended the Detroit Red Wings' six-game winning streak on Tuesday night.

Nashville, which got regulation goals from Scott Hartnell and Steve Sullivan, won its fifth straight. Marek Zidlicky added two assists.

Robert Lang and Brendan Shanahan scored for Detroit.

Erat's goal, which beat Manny Legace, was the Predators' fourth of the shootout. Paul Kariya, Sullivan and Mike Sillinger also scored in the extra session.

Vokoun stopped Brendan Shanahan, the Red Wings' sixth shooter, to end it. Pavel Datsyuk, Jason Williams and Steve Yzerman beat Vokoun but Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom were stopped.

"I didn't do very good," Vokoun said. "But our guys came through and scored a bunch of goals and that's why we won."

Kariya gave Legace credit for his performance in the tiebreaker.

"Manny's a great goaltender," Kariya said. "And if you look at the shots, I think every one went post. You have to put a perfect shot against him because he's got a perfect glove hand."

Legace, who made 35 saves, stopped Hartnell on a penalty shot with 5:12 left in regulation after Hartnell was pulled down by Mathieu Schneider on a breakaway. Legace also made an outstanding glove save on Kariya on a shot from the left circle with 1:41 remaining in regulation.

"I didn't think we were mentally sharp in the third period," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "So it was good to see Manny back on his game."

The victory moved Nashville within eight points of first-place Detroit in the Central Division with 13 games remaining.

"We're not going to worry about the Red Wings," Sillinger said. "We've got to worry about our game."

Vokoun, who made 39 saves, denied Kris Draper on a one-timer from point-blank range five minutes into the third period.

Despite the loss, the Red Wings reached 100 points for the sixth straight season.

"I don't think 100 points is that special," Zetterberg said. "We're going for first place overall and you have to go above 100 points to do that."

Detroit outshot Nashville 18-8 in the second period.

Most of the period was spent in the Predators' zone, but Vokoun was able to turn away every shot.

The Predators also had a few good scoring opportunities in the period, but Legace made several big saves, too.

Hartnell opened the scoring 5:57 in with his 23rd goal. Detroit got two power-play goals to take a 2-1 lead. Lang's five-on-three tally tied it at 9:34, and Shanahan's 32nd with 9:29 remaining put the Red Wings on top.

Sullivan's 30th, with a two-man advantage, got the Predators even at 2.
