San Jose 3, Los Angeles 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Matt Carle and Ryane Clowe had first-period goals, and Joe Pavelski scored in the third to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night.

Nolan Schaefer stopped 17 shots, and Dimitri Patzold made 11 saves for the Sharks, who won their preseason opener.

Carle scored off a rebound of a shot by Jonathan Cheechoo 12:37 in. Clowe jammed in a loose puck during a power play 5:19 later to make it 2-0.

Pavelski also knocked in a free puck in the crease for his third-period goal.

Kings defenseman Rob Blake wrecked San Jose's shutout attempt when fired in a shot from the high slot with just 4:33 left.

Blake was making his debut after returning to the Kings as a free agent. He played his first 12 NHL seasons in Los Angeles, serving as the team's captain for five seasons before being traded to Colorado in February 2001.

Newly acquired goaltender Dan Cloutier stopped 17 of 19 shots in his first game with Los Angeles. His best effort was a sprawling glove save on a goal-mouth shot by Joe Thornton during a Sharks power play midway into the second period.

Jonathan Bernier, the Kings' top pick in this year's draft, replaced Cloutier with 9:08 to go in the second period.
