EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Blair Betts triggered New York's three-goal outburst in the first period, and the Rangers beat the New Jersey Devils 3-1 Tuesday night in an exhibition game.

Betts, Adam Hall and Brandon Dubinsky scored in a span of 4:16 against Martin Brodeur, last season's runner-up for the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goalie.

Brodeur saw his first action of the preseason, and the rust was evident.

Betts beat him with a backhander at 4:01. Hall intercepted Brodeur's weak clearing pass from behind the net and banked a shot in off the goalie at 7:50 as he scrambled to get back into position. Dubinsky gave the Rangers a 3-0 lead with a shot from the top of the left circle.

Tuomas Pihlman scored for the Devils at 11:31 against Al Montoya, who combined with Stephen Valiquette to stop 24 New Jersey shots.

It was the first exhibition game for the Rangers. The Devils, who swept New York in the first round of last season's playoffs, fell to 1-1 in the preseason.
