ATLANTA (AP) -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored two power-play goals in the first period and Marian Hossa had a goal and two assists to help the Atlanta Thrashers beat the Florida Panthers 6-3 Wednesday night in their preseason home opener.

Jason Krog, an NHL veteran trying to return to the league after playing in Europe the last two seasons, had a goal and two assists for Atlanta.

Kovalchuk, who scored 52 goals last season, gave the Thrashers a 1-0 lead on a 15-foot wrist shot at 3:34. Hossa, who assisted on the first goal, got one of his own less than 6 minutes later on a 25-footer.

The Thrashers (1-1) took a 4-0 lead at 13:14 of the first period before Ville Peltonen, a new addition to the Panthers from Finland's national team, scored for Florida at 13:56. Rostislav Olesz scored for the Panthers (0-3) to cut the margin to 4-2 less than half a minute later.

Brett Sterling completed the scoring in the wild first period with a final-minute goal for Atlanta to make the score 5-2. In the second, Joey Crabb scored the last goal for the Thrashers, who outshot Florida 32-21 for the game.

Kari Lehtonen, Atlanta's top goalie, played the first 30 minutes, allowing two goals and making 12 saves. New Panthers starter Alex Auld played the first period and allowed five goals on 10 shots.
