Thornton's first goal of preseason helps Sharks to win

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- Joe Thornton scored his first goal of the
preseason, and Tomas Plihal got the game-winner midway through the
third period of the San Jose Sharks' 4-3 victory over the Anaheim
Ducks on Saturday night.

Thornton, the NHL's Most Valuable Player last season, got a
power-play goal on defenseman Josh Gorges' second assist of the
night late in the second period.

Craig Valette and Patrick Rissmiller also scored for the Sharks
in their exhibition game at Fresno's SaveMart Center. San Jose
improved to 3-1 in the preseason.

Evgeni Nabokov and Vesa Toskala split the game in goal in their
latest competition for the Sharks' starting job, with Toskala
shutting out the Ducks in the third period.

Tim Brent had two goals and an assist for the Ducks, who have
allowed 15 goals in their four exhibition games.
