TORONTO (AP) -- Vesa Toskala gave up a soft goal on the first shot he faced in his Toronto debut, and the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Maple Leafs 3-2 in a preseason game Thursday night.
The Leafs have such high hopes for the former San Jose backup that they gave him a two-year deal worth $8 million after he was acquired from the Sharks in July.
In his first start after supplanting Andrew Raycroft as Toronto's top goalie, he was tagged with the loss while former Maple Leafs netminder Mikael Tellqvist got the win for Phoenix.
Danny Carcillo scored twice, and Zbynek Michalek added the other Coyotes goal.
Tony Salmelainen and Darcy Tucker had goals for the Maple Leafs.
Toskala blew his first save opportunity when Joel Perrault backhanded a pass toward the crease. Carcillo touched the puck at the side of the net, on what appeared to be a harmless play, but the puck slid through Toskala's pads at 3:24.
Mats Sundin, Jason Blake and Nik Antropov were among players the Leafs who didn't play. Phoenix captain Shane Doan didn't dress for Phoenix.
