In the shootout, Jarret Stoll first scored for Edmonton, and Radium Vrbata tied it for the Coyotes. Then, Reasoner scored. When the Coyotes' Martin Hanzal was stopped in an attempt to extend the shootout, the Oilers were victorious.
Down 1-0, Oilers' Tom Gilbert tied the game when he rifled in a drive from the right face-off circle at 2:32 of the final period.
Though the opening period was scoreless, the Coyotes had chances. Phoenix twice had five-on-three advantages, but could not score.
Soon after the opening face-off of the middle period, Fredrik Sjostrom's centering pass to the goal crease was kicked up the slot by Mathieu Garon, the Edmonton goal keeper. Niko Kapanen was right there for the rebound and drilled in a 15-foot slap shot to give Phoenix a 1-0 lead at 1:29.
The Coyotes also enjoyed a two-man advantage during the final seconds of the second period and early into the final session. As in the first period, they could not score.
The Coyotes hit the post three times during the game. Pete Mueller cranked the puck off the iron twice during the first two periods, and Ed Jovanovski hit the left post during a third period power play.
