PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Rangers defenseman Marc Staal fired a shot in off the right post with 1:11 left in the third period to give New York a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night.
The final preseason game for both teams had a rough edge to it as the clubs combined for 31 penalties and several fights.
A total of 94 minutes in penalties were assessed, including 46 in the first period when New York's Chris Drury fought Richards and was given a major and a misconduct. The Rangers were given 54 minutes in penalties overall.
The Flyers assigned forward Steve Downie to the club's AHL affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms. Downie was suspended Friday by the NHL for 20 games for hitting Ottawa center Dean McAmmond in the head with a flying check during a road game on Tuesday that left McAmmond with a concussion.
