DENVER (AP) -- Andrew Brunette scored the game-winning goal late in the third period to lead the Colorado Avalanche past the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 on Saturday night in the final exhibition game for both teams.
Brunette led an odd-man rush and took a flip pass from Jaroslav Hlinka near the left faceoff circle and wristed the puck past former Avalanche goalie David Aebischer.
Phoenix had to contend with five Colorado power plays and had only a few chances to get their offense going, managing just 19 shots on Colorado goalie Peter Budaj.
Tyler Arnason opened the scoring for the Avalanche at 3:21 in the first period. Steve Reinprecht tied it for Phoenix in the second.
Joe Sakic gave Colorado another lead in the second when he scored his first goal of the preseason. He beat Aebischer for a power-play goal just six seconds after a hooking penalty on the Coyotes' Peter Mueller.
Niko Kapanen tied it again for Phoenix at 11:29 in the third.
Mikael Tellqvist started the game in net for Phoenix and stopped 17 shots before being replaced by Aebischer midway through the second.
Colorado killed all five Phoenix power plays.
