MONCTON, New Brunswick -- Rookie Trevor Smith scored in overtime, giving the Islanders a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night in New York's first preseason game.
Smith got the puck at his blue line and outskated the Boston defense before finding the top corner of the net with a quick backhand shot.
Dennis Wideman put the Bruins on the scoreboard midway through the second period with a low wrist shot from the point that got through traffic and eluded goalie Joey MacDonald.
The Islanders tied it just over on a minute later during a power play. Jon Sim, who missed all but two games last season due to an injury, fired a shot from the side of the net that went in off a skate.
The game got physical in the scoreless third period with Boston throwing a number of big hits. Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask was outstanding, keeping his team in the game as the Islanders held a 38-19 shots advantage.
The Bruins won their preseason opener 8-3 over Montreal on Monday night.
