RALEIGH, N.C. -- Tomas Fleischmann scored twice and the Washington Capitals got their exhibition season off to a good start with a 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night.

Matt Bradley and Mathieu Perreault also scored and Viktor Kozlov added two assists for the Capitals.

Defenseman Joni Pitkanen scored with a two-man advantage for the Hurricanes. He was acquired from Edmonton in the offseason for popular winger Erik Cole.

Fleischmann got the scoring started by knocking a rebound past Carolina goalie Cam Ward some 6 minutes into the game. Bradley added a goal a little over a minute later when he snapped a wrist shot past Ward from deep in the slot.

Ward gave up goals on two of the first three shots he faced and finished with 12 saves in 30 minutes.

After Pitkanen's goal midway through the second made it 2-1, Perreault finished off a scramble in front of the Carolina net by pushing the puck past Justin Peters, who relieved Ward. Fleischmann finished the scoring with a power-play goal late in the second.

Carolina defenseman Tim Gleason left in the second with what the team called a leg injury and didn't return.

Among the key players sitting this one out were Alexander Ovechkin, Mike Green and Nicklas Backstrom of Washington, and Eric Staal, Rod Brind'Amour and Ray Whitney for Carolina.
