WASHINGTON -- Alex Ovechkin scored a short-handed goal and added two assists to lead the Washington Capitals to a 5-1 preseason victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night.

Ovechkin was the NHL's MVP last season when he led the league with 65 goals and 112 points. He has kept up the scoring this preseason, with four goals and seven points in three games.

Ovechkin started the scoring with five minutes left in the first period, just 14 seconds after teammate Jay Beagle received a penalty for hooking. Ovechkin brought the puck past the blue line, faked a shot, then fired the puck straight into the goal from the top of the right circle.

The Capitals (5-1) scored two goals in the second. Chris Clark took a pass from Ovechkin in front of the net and shot high, then tracked down the puck behind the net and slipped a shot in behind goalie Jean-Sebastien Aubin of the Flyers (3-1-1) at the 3:50 mark.

Nicklas Backstrom added an evenhanded goal at 8:45 in the second period. Brook Laich's shot trickled off the glove of Aubin, and Backstrom put in the loose puck. Ovechkin was also credited with an assist on the play.

Daniel Briere scored for Philadelphia on a power play at 5:18 in the third period.

Tomas Fleischmann of the Capitals scored at 8:19 of the third and Eric Fehr added a goal at 14:03. Sergei Federov assisted on both goals.
