Hejduk pots two as Avs escape Stars' furious third period comeback
DALLAS -- The Colorado Avalanche found a way to survive a third-period comeback attempt by the Dallas Stars.
Milan Hejduk scored two goals, Dallas had the potential tying goal disallowed in the third period, and Colorado held on for a 5-4 victory over the Stars on Saturday.
The Avs carried a 5-2 lead into the third period, but Dallas got close when Loui Eriksson scored from the slot with 18 minutes left and Brad Richards scored 4:47 later.
The Stars thought they'd pulled even at 5 with 7:31 remaining on Brenden Morrow's power-play deflection off Richards' centering pass.
But after a video review, the ruling was that the puck went in off Morrow's glove and the goal was disallowed.
"It's not intentional," Morrow said. "If the puck bounces off me and goes in the net, if it's a rule, those two refs didn't know it. ... I know what happened. It hit me but I didn't intentionally knock it in with my glove. It's a bad call."
Avalanche defenseman Adam Foote said his team got a break on the disallowed goal.
"We got a lucky call on Morrow's goal," Foote said. "They kept coming after that and we really weathered the storm. This was a huge win."
Stars coach Dave Tippett said when the puck goes in off a glove, officials will disallow a goal "almost 100 percent of the time."
Darcy Tucker, Ryan Smyth and Tyler Arnason also scored for the Avalanche (2-3) in their first road win of the season.
Joe Sakic, Wojtek Wolski and Paul Stastny had two assists each for Colorado.
Andrew Raycroft stopped 26 shots to improve to 2-0, matching last season's victory total when Raycroft went 2-9-5 for Toronto.
"I'm on a much better team than I was on last year," Raycroft said. "Scoring five goals a game makes my life much easier."
Rookies Fabian Brunnstrom, James Neal also had goals for the sluggish Stars (1-3-1).
Tippett's defensive-minded club has given up 11 goals in the past two games and 23 in five games.
"If you have to score six to win, you're in trouble," Tippett said. "Losing is losing, but when you give up five a night, that goes against everything I believe in."
A turnover by Dallas' Mike Modano developed into an odd-man Colorado rush, and Hejduk notched his fourth goal of the season off Stastny's setup at 6:44 of the opening period.
"There were some good signs, but we're making errors that end up in the back of our net," Tippett said.
Brunnstrom's power-play goal at 16:25 of the first period tied it at 1, but the Avalanche capitalized on another 2-on-1 only 1:14 later when Tucker converted Wolski's pass.
Neal drew Dallas even at 2 only 13 seconds into the second period, scoring from the slot.
Hejduk put Colorado back in front 3-2 on the power play at 5:29 of the second period when his one-timer from the left circle bounced off the goal post, off Dallas goalie Marty Turco's skate and into the net.
Smyth's power-play rebound at 14:06 of the second period made it 4-2.
Turco got caught out of position as he tried to play the puck behind his net, and Arnason popped a shot into an open net at 18:05 of the second period to stretch Colorado's advantage to 5-2.
Game notes
Stastny and Sakic have points in all five games this season. ... Stars D Doug Janik left the game early in the second period to get medical treatment after taking a puck in the face and did not return. ... Brunnstrom and Neal have combined for six of Dallas' 16 goals this season. ... Tippett shook up his lines in an effort to jump-start the offense after a 6-1 loss at St. Louis on Thursday night. ... Seconds after the third-period goal was disallowed, Morrow was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct.
