PHILADELPHIA -- James van Riemsdyk, vying for a roster spot at left wing, scored two goals to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to their first preseason win, 5-2 over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night.

Mike Pyorala, a 28-year-old free agent playing professionally for the first time outside of Scandanavia, and Dan Carcillo, each had a goal and an assist, and Danny Briere also scored for the Flyers (1-2-1).

Jonathan Ericsson and Kris Newbury scored for the Red Wings (2-3), who dropped their third straight game.

Philadelphia's Ray Emery stopped 28 shots. Chris Osgood had 25 saves for Detroit.

Philadelphia's Simon Gagne and Detroit's Todd Bertuzzi both made their preseason debuts after recovering from groin injuries.

Gagne, who scored 34 goals last year after missing most of the previous season with concussion issues, underwent offseason hip surgery. Then he injured his groin during a Team Canada workout late last month.

Bertuzzi, who signed a one-year contract worth $1.5 million in August, is expected to be one of Detroit's top scorers. He is slated to play on a line with Henrik Zetterberg and Dan Cleary, who are also sidelined with groin injuries.

Briere scored his third goal 36 seconds into the game when he followed up a shot by Scott Hartnell.

Pyorala, a native of Finland who was signed to a free-agent contract in July, made it 2-0 at 7:01 when he redirected a shot by Carcillo into the corner of the net.

After Ericsson scored unassisted on a slap shot from inside the blue line at 9:28, Pyorala feathered a pass to van Riemsdyk, who scored on a backhander at 15:05 to make it 3-1 after the first period.

Carcillo scored from in close at 11:42 of the second period.

Van Riemsdyk, who was drafted No. 2 overall by the Flyers in 2007 before electing to play two years for the University of New Hampshire, made it 5-1 at 2:36 of the third.

Newbury scored on a give-and-go with Kris Draper with 2:36 left in the game.
