Toronto Maple Leafs Power Rankings - 2012-13
| Power Ranking | ||||
| WEEK | RECORD | RANK | COMMENT | |
| Week 15 | 26-17-5 | 10 | The Leafs couldn't snag home-ice advantage, but when you haven't been to the postseason since 2004, a playoff game of any kind, anywhere, is a bonus. | |
| Week 14 | 25-15-5 | 12 | The Leafs clinched their first postseason berth since 2004 with an emphatic win over Ottawa on Saturday night. Let the good times roll in the center of the hockey universe. | |
| Week 13 | 23-13-5 | 8 | Randy Carlyle's men continue to show they're for real with Saturday's dismantling of Montreal. A first playoff berth in nine years is coming your way, Maple Leaf fans. | |
| Week 12 | 21-13-4 | 9 | The Leafs bounced back after a desultory effort against Philadelphia after the trade deadline to edge past New Jersey 2-1 on Saturday and move into fifth in the East. James Reimer looked good against the Devils, although the continued absence of Joffrey Lupul -- is it a concussion or not? -- remains troubling. | |
| Week 11 | 20-12-4 | 9 | Does GM Dave Nonis shore up the goaltending at the trade deadline? Does he need to? The Leafs, winners of three straight, continue to collect points and only the most precipitous of slides will keep them from their first playoff game since 2004. | |
| Week 10 | 17-12-3 | 12 | Not all wins are created equal. Saturday's home win over Boston was as much mental relief as the two points in the standings, finally beating a Bruins team it just could never beat. Problem is, they play each other again Monday night in Beantown. | |
| Week 9 | 15-12-2 | 14 | The Leafs continue to insist the collapse they swore would never happen isn't actually happening right now. The Leafs picked up a huge point in a shootout loss Saturday after being down 4-1 to the Jets. But the yin to that yang is they are winless in five. | |
| Week 8 | 15-10-1 | 8 | The Leafs lost to the Bruins and Penguins in their past two games but played quite well in each game, further cementing their standing as a real playoff contender. | |
| Week 7 | 13-9-0 | 6 | The Leafs continue to prove skeptics wrong as they refuse to allow losses to become losing streaks. They have not lost more than two in a row all season. Their 9-4-0 pace in their past 13 would certainly see them invited to their first playoff dance since 2004. | |
| Week 6 | 11-8-0 | 12 | Tough late third-period loss at rival Ottawa on Saturday night for the Leafs. But James Reimer is on the mend. | |
| Week 5 | 9-6-0 | 9 | The Leafs are staying in the hunt in a very close Northeast Division, shutting down injury-depleted Ottawa on Saturday. They are 7-3-0 in their past 10. | |
| Week 4 | 7-5-0 | 11 | The road warriors (6-1-0) now have to figure it out at home. Leafs fans were in a celebratory mood after a 6-0 clobbering of rival Montreal on Saturday. Take a bow, Randy Carlyle: The Leafs' head coach is getting through to this young roster. They're one of the hardest-working teams, and that's not something you could have said about the Leafs the past few seasons. | |
| Week 3 | 4-4-0 | 17 | James Reimer has emerged as the Leafs' go-to guy in net (at least this week), and they have won two of three to move to 4-4-0 this season. | |
| Week 2 | 2-3-0 | 25 | Back to their old ways defensively. Phil Kessel has yet to score a goal. Randy Carlyle has the right idea; he just needs these guys to believe. | |
| Week 1 | 0-0-0 | 29 | Firing your GM a week before the start of the regular season doesn't help your continuity or consistency. The Leafs are thin down the middle, and goaltending is still a mystery. Playoff misery is likely to extend into the second post-lockout era. | |
| Preseason | 0-0-0 | 24 | I like the JVR deal, especially long-term, for the Leafs. But right now still thin down the middle and shaky in goal, which is a recipe for another non-playoff year. Stay tuned, however, because I think Toronto will try to be active once the lockout doors open. And same as Florida, if the Leafs get Luongo after the lockout, it immediately puts them in playoff contention. | |
| Spring Training | 0-0-0 | 28 | Goaltending issues remain, they still struggle to kill penalties and they lack depth down the middle. Maybe this is the year the Leafs surprise and it all comes together. Maybe not. | |
