Valverde has surgery after breaking collarbone

CAEN, France -- Top rider Alejandro Valverde underwent surgery after breaking his right collarbone during a crash in the third stage of the Tour de France.

The 26-year-old Spaniard was operated on Wednesday in Vega, Spain, his Illes Balears team said Thursday.

Valverde was tossed Tuesday after plowing into a teammate's wheel when the pack of riders slowed sharply. He had been considered a contender to win the Tour following seven straight victories by now-retired Lance Armstrong.
