MALAGA, Spain -- Spain's Carlos Sastre led his team to a time-trial victory by seven seconds Saturday in the opening stage of the Spanish Vuelta, the last major tour of the European cycling season.

Sastre was out front as his CSC team covered the 4.5 miles in and around this Mediterranean port city in 7 minutes, 36 seconds, giving him his first yellow jersey.

Teammates Lars Ytting Bak and Nicki Sorensen of Denmark were next. Jose Vicente Garcia finished 10th to lead CEI to second place in 7:43.

"It's a win for the whole team that's super strong, very motivated and willing to help me in the last 20 stages that remain," Sastre said. "And I know they're going to give 100 percent."

Italy's Davide Rebellin of Geroslteiner crashed taking a tight corner but was not seriously hurt.

Sunday's second stage is a hilly, 109-mile leg from Malaga to the ancient city of Cordoba. The 21-stage, 2,093-mile race ends Sept. 18 in Madrid.
