CARPI, Italy -- Daniele Bennati won the 12th stage of the Giro d'Italia in a sprint finish, while Giovanni Visconti held the overall lead on Thursday.

Bennati, who rides for Liquigas, edged Mark Cavendish. Race organizers needed several minutes to decide who had won the 107-mile stage from Forli to Carpi.

Bennati finished in 4 hours, 5 minutes, 29 seconds. Robbie McEwen was third with the same time.

Visconti's lead remained unchanged at 5 minutes, 50 seconds ahead of Gabriele Bosisio, while Alberto Contador is 6:59 back.

The race Friday is a 110-mile flat route from Modena to Cittadella.
