VARESE, Italy -- Colombia's Fabio Duarte broke away from the pack with less than a mile left to win the men's under-23 race at the world road championships on Friday.

Duarte finished in 4 hours, 17 minutes, 2 seconds, with Italy's Simone Ponzi second and John Degenkolb of Germany third after 10 laps of the course around the town of Varese, just north of Milan.

Italy's Adriano Malori took the men's under-23 time trial title on the opening day of the world championships on Tuesday, but was never in the running during Friday's road race.

The women's road race takes place on Saturday, and the championships conclude with the men's race on Sunday.
