BMC suspends Ballan, Santambrogio

MILAN -- Former world champion Alessandro Ballan and Mauro Santambrogio have been provisionally suspended by the BMC team pending a doping inquiry involving their former squad Lampre.

BMC, an American squad, issued a statement Friday noting that the pair of Italian riders "are the subject of an investigation by Italian authorities stemming from incidents that took place more than two years ago -- when they were members of the Lampre team and not affiliated with the BMC Racing Team."

Other current and former Lampre riders, team managers, technicians and physicians are also reportedly under investigation as part of the inquiry based in Mantova.

BMC said the suspensions "should not be seen as pre-determination of guilt."
