OTTAWA -- Olympic champion ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir will miss Skate Canada, their first Grand Prix assignment, after Virtue had surgery to relieve pressure in both calves.

Virtue has compartment syndrome, which causes pain and swelling in the calves and shins. She had a similar surgery on the front of her legs in fall 2008. Virtue had hoped to put off the latest surgery until after the season, but decided to go ahead because of the pain.

The Vancouver gold medalists want to resume training soon, but are likely to miss the entire Grand Prix season. Besides Skate Canada Oct. 29-31 in Kingston, Ontario, they were assigned to Trophee Eric Bompard Nov. 26-28 in Paris.
